Italy Is Calling Me

When I think I am pretty well organized to go on this trip, obstacles present themselves and create anxiety in me. On December 3, 2012, I sent a package ahead with many items that we will need while we are there, and lots of gifts that we are giving to family and friends when we arrive. Here it is, 45 days later, and the package has not arrived yet. And we are just 41 days away from our departure. The frustration for me is building! However, I am keeping my focus on the whole purpose for our visit - to see family, the homeland of my ancestors, experience the sights and sounds of this beautiful destination, and to meet the new friends I have made through our family. Albeit, this is a difficult thing to do as my planning has hit a small snag. Let's hope it resolves soon with the delivery of the package. With many precious gifts on-board, I only hope it is not lost!

We are 43 days out from our departure on this great adventure. I have spent a good deal of time gathering all of my thoughts onto a list for things I will need to take to be able to do the things we need to do. Airline reservations have been in place for several months now, the hotel in Gaeta is booked, and our hotel in Rome is reserved. There is so much to do, but it feels like there is so little time to do it in the two weeks we will be there. I will be keeping a written journal of our trip as well with more private thoughts for my wife to see while I am gone. For Christmas, she gave me a travel journal that is absolutely wonderful for doing this. This will be a wonderful adventure for me to meet family I have never seen before, see family I have, greet new family into this world with the arrival of a new cousin just weeks before our trip, and to see the homeland area where my ancestors are from.

Happy New Year!

Time is still flying, but I am ready to get going to Italy. Today is 52 days away from departing on our journey. I have everything ready to go, just not packed into my suitcase (my OCD is coming out). We made a decision to send most of our gifts ahead of us to alleviate the weight and expense of carrying them with us on the plane (I know this was a good decision, although it has been 35 days and it still has not arrived i Italy). Sending the package early insures that we are able to get everything there, and it will be easier on Vito and Wilma so they do not have to be on the lookout for the package while awaiting the arrival of their baby girl.

My wife gave me a journal to write in daily with a pocket to collect souvenirs from my travels, so I will be busy. This was probably my favorite Christmas gift as it gives me a.place to write more private thoughts about my upcoming journey to share with her. Entries will start to get more numerous on our blog.between now and our departure as well.

Ciao!

I am Greg Smith. I work for the North Carolina Community College System in Greenville, NC, but I serve the entire State of North Carolina. This is my first trip to Italy, and thankfully it is with my twin brother who has been one time before. I am relying on him to get me through the ins-and-outs of traveling abroad for my very first time, and especially with the language barrier. In addition, our cousin will serve as our host, interpreter, tour guide, and family mentor while we are there.
