Hitting Me

8/28/2012

It has hit me that I will be gone from my beautiful wife for two weeks. That is a long time! We have not spent more than a couple of days apart since getting married. I wish she was going with us, but she has insisted she will go again with me in the future when we have more time to explore not just southern Italy, but also northern Italy. We also dream of going to Venice, Florence, through Tuscany, Cinque Terra, Capri, Poisitano, and of course spending much more time in Rome than what we will be doing on this trip. I will be e-mailing her, texting her, or calling her at least once daily. And with Facebook, I can also instant message her. Baby, photos will be coming every day for you! I love you, and I will miss you! And I am still 184 days away from being gone! :)

Departure for Italy

8/16/2012

August 16, 2012 - We depart on March 1, 2013 at 1:30 pm via US Airways from Raleigh/ Durham International Airport with a stop in Philadelphia. I am not a big fan of Philadelphia's airport. It seems that every time I have ever flown through this airport, I have been delayed or flights have been cancelled, so I will be keeping my fingers, arms, toes, and legs crossed that this does not happen for our trip. We should arrive in Rome at 8:55 am where our cousin, Vito, will pick us up and drive us to our hotel in Gaeta about 90 miles south. There will be some stops along the way for us to photograph some scenic points, perhaps in Terracina and Sperlonga. Our first day will likely be spent resting and a little bit of visiting with our cousin and his wife, Wilma.

I am Greg Smith. I work for the North Carolina Community College System in Greenville, NC, but I serve the entire State of North Carolina. This is my first trip to Italy, and thankfully it is with my twin brother who has been one time before. I am relying on him to get me through the ins-and-outs of traveling abroad for my very first time, and especially with the language barrier. In addition, our cousin will serve as our host, interpreter, tour guide, and family mentor while we are there.
